How To Make A Bow

How To Make A Bow For Gifts or Gift Baskets

- Shirley shows us the right way to make a bow step-by-step

[Video] Shirley: Hi, this is Shirley. I want to show you how to make a bow from ribbon that you can get in crafts stores or any other place that sells wonderful ribbon. The bow that I am going to show you looks just like this, and like this if you make it a little bit wider, and I'll show you this one again at the end. This ribbon is 3 inches wide. You can use ribbon that is 1 1/2 inches wide and wider, so 1.5 to 3 inches wide is great. This ribbon has a shiny side and a dull side (this is the shiny side, this is the dull side), and you want to keep the shiny on the outside as you fold the ribbon, and that's basically what we do when we make a bow out of ribbon - we fold the ribbon over each other.

You want the ribbon to be about seven inches wide so you can use a ruler if you want but bring the ribbon down on itself with the shiny side on the outside to make your bow and fold it over and over and fold it about 12 times. This is about 4 times right now (counts to 12 while folding).

Have your scissors ready and cut about 2 inches down from the last fold bring your ribbon together and then when all of the loops are together fold the ribbon in half, don't include the tail, just fold it in half and crease the ribbon right where you folded it. From here you can use curling ribbon that you can also get in a crafts store or in this case I am using a twist tie to tie this very quickly. Before I add the twist tie I will cut a piece of the ribbon away from the end, I am cutting diagonally a half inch in to a half an inch up. An now, I'll take the twist tie and bring it down into the cuts in the ribbon and twist very tightly. Twist! And I am twisting tightly so the twist ties don't come apart, and I am separating the loops from themselves. What you do from here is pull each loop away from the loop sets, so I am just pulling each loop and pulling it away from itself, until I am all done and then I work with the other set of loops. Always working with the top loop, pulling it away until you are finished with all of the loops - all the loops are separated.

And it already doesn't look too bad. But now you want to fix the loops so that each one stands on it's own. You can choose one loop to be a center loop if you want....just that quickly - gorgeous bow!

Now with this loop, this bow that is a little bit wider (about 9-10 inch) which happens to have curly ribbon attached in the middle instead of the twist ties. This kind of bow (the first one) you can place on a gift very easily with the twist ties. So both have come out beautifully. It just depends on what kind of ribbon you want to use, and what kind of cinching you want to use.
